This condition applied to planets which were one sign apart (30°) or 5 signs apart (150°) because these distances are not considered major aspects, but planets which could not see one another by degree or sign could still interact with or be aware of the other through other conditions like mutual reception. Conversely planets which were not in aspect either by sign or degree were unable to see one another. Early thinking about all aspects involved the concept of planets being able to “see” one another – the concept of aspects was seen as a visual one with planets in particular signs being able to see one another while those which were in a very close or exact aspect were truly scrutinizing each other. If they were exactly 60° apart this was simply the greatest point at which the sextile was significant. In the ancient world however planets could be considered in sextile so long as they were in the appropriate signs regardless of how close they were to being 60° apart. When we allow for orbs of influence astrologers usually give 6° for a sextile so that the planets can be anywhere between 56° and 66° apart from one another and still be in a sextile. The sextile is an aspect of 60° which means that the planets in sextile are naturally positioned two signs apart from one another.
